Capturing Subscribers for Your Blog

Affiliate Program Guide

Periodically, I go back and read the comments on my blog. I’d like to say thank you to all of my readers. Your comments are interesting, and they do inspire me when writing my material, so I can provide you with newer and better resources.

One of the comments was from one of my readers, Matt. Matt is a college student in the UK. He wanted to exchange links.

I took a look at his blog, and he has a pretty nice blog, so I’ll be posting comments on his blog too.

He seems to understand that one of the most important things you can do with affiliate programs is to write reviews. Writing a review is a way of providing more information for your potential customer than he/she will get from a sales letter. This is valuable stuff because I’m often skeptical when I read a sales letter because I’ve bought too many products that didn’t deliver.

Now, with that said, there’s a tip I want to share with all of you, Matt included.

List building has been a big deal these days. In fact, list building is a crucial part of any business because if you don’t communicate with your readers and customers regularly, you can’t build a relationship. By building a relationship, then you can make the sale because your readers trust you.

To build a list, you need a subscription box. This is a featured that isn’t included on blogs, and that’s too bad. Only about 20 percent of internet users read blogs, and even fewer use RSS. If you really want to capture readers to your blog, you need to allow them to subscribe by email.

It’s really not as hard as it sounds. You can go over to Feedblitz and set up an account. You add your information, and the system will generate the HTML you need to paste a subscription box into your blog.

Once you paste it into your blog, you’re done. The whole system is automatic, and allows subscribers to subscribe and unsubscribe on their own. It’s also double optin, so readers have to confirm their subscriptions first.

The system sends out a daily digest when you post. This version is free, and you can add as many RSS feeds as you like. If you want more customization features, then you can sign up for a very inexpensive upgrade.

If you want to improve your subscription numbers, and everyone does, I believe this is the way to go. Not only that, but you give your readers options, as well as a little extra value.

Interactions Between Blogs

As your blog’s content increases, people in your niche will definitely mention you for intelligent or interesting discussions. When people speak of you, you should thank them for the mention and build up the interaction.

When you use a traffic tracking script such as the free Stat Counter, you can see where traffic comes from. If a large number of visitors come from a certain blog, you can be sure they have mentioned you in their latest post or linked to you from their sidebar or links page. What you should do is pay them a visit, leave constructive comments on their posts and build up a conversation.

As you continue doing this, you will start to gather a lot of friends in your niche. This is helpful later on when you decide to do joint ventures or a collaboration, such as an interview. In fact, when you’re out of ideas for writing on your blog, you can interview other blog owners in your niche.

Human beings are curious creatures, so naturally they would like to know more about a person whose writings they read so often.

If you’re using WordPress, Textpattern, MovableType or any other advanced blog engines, you can also post trackback links on your posts. This means you can post an article about what other people have posted. Your particular post will then appear as a link on that post you have written about. This is definitely a great way to get traffic if you post brilliant insights about a post on a very famous blog. Since the famous blog already has a per-existing pool of readers, this is like a shortcut to hog their visitors. The only thing you would want to observe is to keep your posts sensible and insightful, or you’ll be viewed as a spammer.

On the other hand, if you’re using Blogger, you would not be able to use trackback links. However, you can post insightful comments on other people’s blogs and subtly include a link back to your blog. You can make it seem like you’re pointing to your blog as an extra reference to the subject of discussion. Of course, this technique is not only limited to Blogger users and users of other blog engines can employ this strategy as an additional traffic source.

The bottom line is that you can promote your blog by talking about other blogs, as well as posting your comments. Create valuable content, as well as insightful comments, and you can easily use this technique to build traffic to your blog.
