Income – Expenses = Profit

For those who are new to online business, I’ve found that most are thinking about how much money they can make online, not cutting expenses and saving money on the things they use for business.

However, if you want to make money from any business, you have to watch your expenses. If your expenses are out of hand, they’ll cut into your profits.

If you run an online business, here are some areas in your business you may want to consider cutting costs:

1. Web Hosting

Why buy more web hosting than you have to? If you run a membership site of some type that uses a lot of bandwidth and requires lots of space, then spend the money.

For the average website owner though, there are plenty of bargains available and the hosting isĀ  reliable. Do your homework. Understand what features your webhost offers. This will help you choose what you need. If you don’t need databases, or you don’t need a ton of space, don’t pay for it. It’s a waste of money.

2. Affiliate Program Management

My affiliate program management script is part of my web hosting, and it’s one of the few solutions online that’s offered that way. Often you will have to pay for this service separately. If you are just starting out, you want to keep the costs here as low as possible.

Start by looking for a script you may install on your own server to use. A one time solution will save you a lot of money over the long haul. Check your features. Decide what you need first and explore your options.

If you can’t find a solution within your budget, consider some type of monthly membership. There are plenty of these available, and some are inexpensive and feature rich at the same time.

3. Autoresponders

If you need to build lists for your business, then you definitely need autoresponders. Depending on which system you choose, the costs can add up quickly.

If you’re not planning to build large lists, or you don’t need a lot of lists, consider buying a script of your own and installing it on your server. Also, check to see if your web host offers some type of solution. This will save you time and money.

If you need a more comprehensive solution, then shop around. Bargains abound.

4. Physical Supplies

This can quickly become a large expense, especially if you think you need all of the latest and greatest in computers, phones, office supplies, or anything else.

If possible, buy on sale and look for bargains. Buy only what you need, and don’t waste your time on equipment you don’t.

5. Office Space/Equipment

One of the reasons I started a business was so that I could work at home. Working at home is my sanctuary. However, as your business grows, you may think that you need more space than just the kitchen table at odd hours.

Again, look for bargains when renting space and equipment. Although location may be important if you feel the need to work outside of your home, location can cost you a lot of money.

One of the biggest mistakes most businesses make in a recession is to cut their marketing plans even though marketing is the lifeblood of your business. If you don’t market, you don’t make sales.

Now it may be more difficult to make money online if you are having to slash your marketing costs, but that doesn’t mean you should stop marketing. All you have to do is be a little more creative.

One of the most effective ways to market your business and really get results is through repetition. The more you put your marketing message in front of your potential customers, the more likely you are to get results. (Think opt in lists and ezines.)

Just make sure that your marketing is targeted. In other words, market in front of those who are interested in what you sell. Don’t waste your time on people who aren’t interested in what you have to offer.

Market your business using free online and offline techniques. Online techniques include search engine optimization, article writing, forum marketing, press releases, classified advertising and joint ventures. Offline, you may want to consider buying business cards, creating flyers, using low cost classifieds in free papers.

As your business continues to make more money, roll some of your profits back into your marketing plan. The more you market, the more you can increase your profits.

Another thing you want to consider is your own marketing and copywriting skills. What skills do you have? This will influence how you market your business. If you don’t have these skills, you definitely want to develop them. These skills will make your more effective in promoting your business. The more effective you are, the less you will have to work to get the sale.

How you market is also another major consideration. When you’re first starting off, you will only want to try one marketing technique at a time. If you try more than one technique at a time, you will have difficulty telling which technique is driving traffic and sales in your business.

Choose a technique that you want to do. I personally use article writing and submission because it gets me all of the traffic and sales I need. Consider too that I’m also a writer so it’s something I enjoy doing.

If you hate the marketing technique you are doing, you won’t do it. You’ll also find that although there are many techniques that work, there is one technique that will work best for you if you give it your best effort.

Market more. Market consistently. Master your marketing technique. Test and track your marketing. These are your keys to success. Much of marketing is trial and error until you determine what works. You’ll never know until you get started.

Classified advertising, both free and paid, is the easiest way to market your business both online and offline. The reason is that most people are familiar with classified ads. The advantage of marketing this way is that those who visit classified ad sites and read print classifieds are looking for a bargain.

If you don’t have a budget for marketing, then I would recommend that you start with free online classified ad sites. To find sites that get a lot of traffic, do a search for classified ads, free classified ads, submit classified ads, etc. (Check the ranking of the site on Alexa to tell you if the site gets a lot of traffic. You may also get traffic statistics.)

It’s also a good idea to look for classified sites that are specifically related to the topic of the products or services you are selling. This may help you target your market better and actually increase your traffic and sales. Read the guidelines for all of the sites you plan to submit to first. You will get better results if follow the rules.

Write your ads. Depending on what you are offering, you may not want to try and sell in the ad. Follow the two step process instead. Give visitors a reason to want to visit your website. For example, a free report, newsletter, or something visitors can’t find anywhere else.

Post your ads. Once you start posting your ads, renew them as they expire. This will save you a lot of time with your ads. If you do decide to recycle your ads, make sure you test and track your ads. Don’t waste your time reposting ads that don’t work.

One of the secrets to classified advertising, or any type of marketing for that matter is what I call the “Law of Averages” marketing. What this means is that you post as many ads as possible because the more ads you have promoting for you, the more likely you are to get traffic. The truth is, many ads won’t perform, so by having as many ads as possible circulating, you increase your chances.

If you have a little money, or you’re ready to expand, then try using classified ad sites offline. Look for newspapers that have websites online. This will lead you to print publications to market in, and you may even market geographically.

Regardless of whether you sell your own products and services or someone else’s, classifieds are an easy way to make a fast profit.

Online Business Strategies to Survive the Recession: Product Creation

One of the most overlooked strategies for increasing your business during a recession is product creation (I believe that the number one strategy is to market your business more.)

When you apply product creation to expansion of your business, it includes adding new products to your product line, improving your current products, or adding affiliate products to the mix. Any expansion you do also allows you to add upsells (more expensive products) as well as offer your customers more options to solve their problems (This is why they buy.)

Now it’s obvious that when you’re expanding your product line you will expand according to what you sell. If you are writing and selling books or ebooks, you will want to simply write more ebooks or books to sell. The more books and ebooks you have to offer, the more likely you are to make the sale. It’s also much easier to expand a digital product line than it is a physical product line so you may produce these new products quickly.

If you have a physical product line that’s not related to books, ebooks, or something that’s easily distributed online, you may want to look for wholesalers that offer products that complement what you sell. Most businesses won’t be able to create their own products here so it’s necessary to find companies that may produce what you want to offer. Wholesalers make this process easier.

Offering more expensive products not only allows you to increase your profits, but you can sell less and still make more money. With books and ebooks, you may consider creating courses or changing the format. Audio and video tend to sell for a higher price, so this is easy. With other physical products, you may consider adding more to the package, or creating a deluxe version of what you are already offering.

Affiliate products are by far the easiest way to expand your product offerings, and it’s also faster because you’re not having to create products. You only sell them.

The best place to find these types of products is to browse large networks like Linkshare, Commission Junction, Clickbank, and other sites that offer thousands of products.

Regardless of how you decide to expand your product line, focus on solutions that solve your customers’ problems. Don’t just sell something because you believe it will be profitable. Ultimately this may cause you to alienate your current customers.

Finally, remember to add product offerings that will not only please your current customers and make them buy but add new product offerings to attract new customers.
