My mother always told me that you get what you pay for. However, I have learned over the years that this isn’t necessarily true.
I recently received an email from internet marketer Mark Hendricks, one of those internet marketing “gurus” who claims to teach internet marketing but really doesn’t.
Don’t get me wrong. I like Mark, but I also know that there are a lot of people out there in business who don’t have a staff, don’t have other people create their products and then sell them under their own name, and don’t make claims that they made $1,000,000 in one day.
The truth is, the person who made that claim spent weeks setting up a joint venture. Not only that, this person is the “Al Gore” of internet marketing and makes claims that aren’t true. I know they’re not true.
Frankly, about two weeks ago I almost quit internet marketing. I’m sick of it, and I was sick of it. The thing is, every time I tell myself I’m going to quit, someone comes along and needs my help.
It’s the reason I completely revamped my membership site, and it’s the reason that I’ll be offering my products in both physical and digital form in the future, and they’ll be priced reasonably so that anyone can afford them. It’s about delivering value, pure and simple.
Anyway, to get back to what I was saying about Mark, Mark made the statement that you won’t find out what you want to know from a $7 ebook. That if you really want to know the “secrets”, you’ll have to buy more expensive products.
I disagree, and I disagree very strongly. One of the best ebooks I have ever read is Bum Marketing by James Brown. Another good one, which you can get on my site, is Craig’s List Traffic. Both of these titles only cost $7, but they are worth far more.
I’ve bought plenty of $97 ebooks, and I don’t think I’ve ever read one that lived up to its claim. Instead, they often included information I already knew and simply wasn’t implementing. Lesson learned. Things I knew worked really worked, I just simply needed to implement them.
And there are plenty of clicks in internet marketing too. Depending on what lists you’re on, you’ll see the same things over and over. You’ll get sick of it. Some of this stuff is PLR being sold under different names with different graphics. In fact, I really have no idea how much stuff I have on my computer that’s multiple copies of the same PLR ebook.
I’ve learned a valuable lesson from all of this.
First, anything I sell will be one of three things: affiliate programs, so you know who really owns the product. Second, resale rights, but I’ll throw in a few bonuses. Finally, my own products. Then my customers know that what they are getting is what I created, not what I paid someone else to create, and not something I bought and revamped.
The bottom line is that it’s all about delivering value, and the truth is, you can’t put a price tag on that.
It’s not true that you get what you pay for. There are excellent products in every price range. Just make sure you are discerning about what you buy. It’s your money. Marketers need to underhype and overdeliver, and they (we), need to treat our customers right every time.

Good post – it’s refreshing to see a hype-free treatment of this topic.
I’ve read a couple of those 7 dollar ebooks (the Jon Leger ones) and there’s some very good content in there. I like the format (who has time to read a 200 page ebook anymore?) and appreciate information being distilled into a few content-dense pages.
Length definitely doesn’t lessen their value to me.
Thanks for a great post. I’m always interested to hear which ebooks people have found important to their IM business. (And that there are some gems in the under $20 range!)
