Forum Marketing – Part 1

My friend Dylan Loh wrote this article on forum marketing, and I thought it was pretty good. I wanted to share it with you.

In the previous issue I talked about article marketing

I hope you’ve a good and hard read at that because article marketing is really one of the MOST effective and cost effective ways to get traffic and sales

Forum marketing is more subtle way of marketing. The way I see forum marketing is used for :

1. Branding themselves – Getting their names seen as many times as possible.

2. Getting traffic – Having a powerfull signature file and participating in related posts can have a profound effect on traffic, sales and/or sign ups…

3. Establish relationships – Most profitable of them all. Contribute and help a fellow poster and you’ve gained friend and possible partner

Go and participate in 3-5 forums related to your product or the product you are selling.

Created a username that tells something about you, prefably your NAME! Craft a killer signature line and start contributing in the forums.

Remember, the key is to build a reputation AND get them to click on your link. You’ve to be really clear about what you want them to do after they’ve clicked on the link.

:: Do you want them to sign up? :: Post a comment on your blog? :: Make a sale? :: Participate in a JV?

Yes! It could be done with Forums too!

As you already know some of the more popular forums around gets really heavy traffic and owns a high PR from Google…

So the trick is to link to your site for the search term you want to rank for with an ‘anchor text’ of the keyword

For E.G. you’ve a blog on cheap calculators so you create a signature with just the word ‘cheap calculators’and link it to your site.

VOILA! A backlink from a high PR site. Do is a few more times with other forums and you could start seeing your site climbing up the Google rankings pretty fast

:: Get people talking and participating!

If you can create a mass post frenzy, you’ve got people’s attention! The long you’re at the top the more exposure you get

:: Help fellow posters without asking anything in return

Seriously, just give unconditional help. You never know when you migh need some yourself!

:: Selective posting

Say you’ve got a site that sells a product on how to build up lists. So naturally you should dive in and scan posts that are related to email marketing OR list building…

People will notice your signature line MORE since they are already talking about something related to the link in your signature…

And it makes you look like an ‘authority’ on the subject

:: Don’t be an as*

Don’t act like you know everything, don’t spam, never forget to read the forum rules and never make stupid comments.

If you don’t know about something, at least not enough to post, then DON’T!
