Although I haven’t talked much about this, building a list for your business or writing is absolutely crucial to building a your success regardless of what you sell.

The reason is that you have a ready market for your products and services.

The first thing you need to do is choose your tools for your list building.

This means you need an autoresponder, or a system to capture information. Using an autoresponder is especially important because you want to automate the entire process of building your list. With an autoresponder, you will automate all of the subscribes, unsubscribes, and maintenance of your list. This will save you a lot of time.

If you are a writer, I cannot stress enough the importance of building a list. Your list will be readers that are interested in your writing. Every time you release a new book, you will want to tell your readers about it. This will help you make more sales.

There are plenty of places where you can get free autoresponders, but let me caution you that the problem with free autoresponders is that the autoresponder companies will put ads in your headers and footers. You want to avoid this, if possible.

It’s worth it to buy a good autoresponder system. Here are three you can look at:

Get Response

Ultimate Marketing Center - This is a complete hosting solution and includes unlimited autoresponders. It’s also the most inexpensive solution I have found.

If you read and follow the instructions on your autoresponder, you should have no trouble setting it up. Once you’ve done that, copy and paste the code into your website. Put it on every page.

You can also create a popup for your main page of your site.

Depending on what type of list you want to build, you can also use a site like Yahoo Groups. This might help you get a little more publicity. All you have to do is copy and paste the code into your site.

I’ve seen quite a few authors opt for this solutions. The only drawback is that you won’t be able to redirect your readers to the site you want when your readers subscribe. Redirects can help you make extra cash from your subscriptions.

The same principle applies: copy and paste the code for your list into all of your pages. This way, no matter what page your visitors enter your site, they will have access to your subscription box and can subscribe.

Once you’ve created your list, if you use an autoresponder, you’ll want to add some messages to it. On average, you need to make contact with your list an average of seven times. About 80% will buy. This is the most important aspect of making contact with your list. Do it regularly.

Don’t go overboard though. I’ve had to unsubscribe from lists because I received too many emails. Every three or four days, or once or twice a week is good.

Send your readers a survey once in awhile. Ask them what they are interested in. What their concerns are. Use their answers to help you create new products.

Focus on your readers and customers. By focusing on them you both win. They get products they need. You get sales.

The most important thing you can do for your business, especially if you are a writer, is to create a list.
