I was reading an ebook over the weekend about information overload. I think this is a problem for all of us, but it doesn’t have to be.

There are many reasons people don’t succeed in online business: they don’t market, they don’t do things in the order they need to be done to create a business, or they simply don’t get started.

Maybe you’re afraid of what other people think. That’s one I would get over if I were you because there will always be snotty, hateful people who will give you a hard time, make fun of you, or whatever. If they don’t sign your paycheck, or you don’t live with them, then who really cares what they think? Sometimes the people who claim to love you the most will be the ones to shoot you down first (I know this because I get it from my entire family). Ignore them. It’s one thing if they mean well, and they’re trying to prevent you from doing something dangerous. It’s something else if they have an agenda.

Then you have those who are so new to internet marketing they hardly know how to use their computers. My advice is to learn. We all started out not knowing anything about computers or online business. Anyone can learn it. Hard work and sacrifice are still the ways to success.

My favorite group, and I say this sarcastically, are the ones who will approach you and want you to teach them everything you know about internet marketing and online business, and they want you to do it for free. Then they want you to do the work, again, for free. The problem here is that I’ve never been able to pay my bills, buy groceries or gas, or get anything else in life with love or my looks. Some things in life require cold hard cash. I’m willing to help others when I can, but there also has to be a limit.

Where do I start seems to be a big problem, especially with those who are first getting started.

The answer is really simple: you need a product, either your own or someone else’s. Build a website, a Squidoo lens, or buy pay per click and simply market the affiliate link.

(If you want to learn more about how to do this, read Anthony Borelli’s Affiliate Millions or Ewen Chia’s Affiliate Money Machine. Borelli’s book is on Amazon, or you can get it from your local library.)

There are free techniques you can use to market, but you need to learn how to use them first before you go out there and waste your time or money. Money is easy to replace, but you can never replace your time. Why waste time on things that don’t work?

You can’t fail if you don’t get started. You have to take some kind of action. Period. You can do all of the Secret Law of Attraction daydreaming you want, but if you don’t get started, nothing happens.

One of my favorite stories from the Civil War (I’m a Civil War buff) is when President Abraham Lincoln was trying to find a general to successfully run the war. One of the first he chose was McClellan.

McClellan was a great organizer. He knew how to get things in order, plan everything out, and set everything up. After losing a few battles, Lincoln fired him. The reason is that once McClellan got everything set up, he didn’t do anything.

I think Lincoln went through a few other generals after that before he got to Ulysses S. Grant. Grant was a hard drinking man who graduated second from the last in his class at West Point in 1846. For all of his flaws, Grant knew how to plan campaigns, but he also knew how to execute them. He would do anything to win. And win he did.

Here’s my point: once you figure out what you’re doing, don’t be afraid to fail. Be willing to take action. The path to success is failure and action. You don’t have to be perfect. Not every article you write or advertising campaign you create will be successful. Learn from your mistakes and do the things that worked for you in the past.

I’ll publish some articles on this to give you some ideas. The most important thing to remember is that you have to do something or nothing happens. Learn what you need to know and then do it.
