I was reading the comments this morning, and I found tht I have some pretty insightful readers. Thank you.
I also noticed a comment from a reader about ezines and newsletters. The reader was worried that her ezine wouldn’t be the best, and she would be criticized for it.
I want to give you some tips on creating an ezine, and later down the road I’ll show you some ways to promote it. Let me say here that usually, if readers don’t like your ezine, they’ll either not read it, or they’ll unsubscribe.
You won’t please everyone you deal with, so don’t even try. Your focus really should be on turning out a quality product.
Now, here are some tips for creating, and publishing, an ezine.
1. Know your audience. Before you publish anything in your ezine, make sure you know who you are creating your ezine for. This is vitally important because you will use this information to help you select the materials for your ezine.
Eventhough you are providing information to your readers, and your ezine is a “soft” way of marketing to your readers, you need to know who they are. Once your list grows, it’s a pretty good idea to do a survey to find out what they want.
Another good way to find out what others want to know is to read forums on your topic. People tend to ask a lot of the same questions over and and over on any given topic, so know what others are asking and then answer it.
2. Format your ezine so that it is easy to read.
I was catching up on my reading last night, and I was reading some of the many ebooks that I own, and I was reading them on my computer.
What a huge difference from reading in print! It really slowed me down, and it will slow your readers down because people read about 25 percent slower on the computer.
That’s why I recommend formatting in text.
There’s also an excellent ezine template online you can actually use to format your ezine, and this will give you some ideas on things to include in your ezine.
I’m not sure if this template formats to a certain width because it’s been a long time since I used it, so you can use this tool to help you format for width. It will also give you a word count so that your ezine isn’t too long. You can also use this tool to format articles.
3. Make your content valuable.
Many will tell you that you need to write all the content. Then it’s exclusive. One of the reasons why I switched to using a blog to create my ezine was that it combined two tasks into one. Creating an ezine is a lot of work.
However, some of the best ezines I subscribe to include information. I’m not constantly getting a sales message from someone.
Although it’s a good idea to publish your ezine about once a week, and I wouldn’t recommend sending your readers more than two to three emails a week total, this may not be feasible for you.
Publish once a month then, and send out periodic updates. Let your readers know you are there.
Include a short column written by you, and remember to make everything you include in your ezine something valuable for your readers.
4. Run your ezine through a spam filter.
If you run your email through a spam filter first, you’ll find out what words are tripping the filters. You can use this tool to help you get your email through.
As I said before, we’ll do a segment on ezine promotion later. Let me hear your comments.
