In my last post, I mentioned My Free Website Builder. This is a great tool for building search engine friendly, content rich sites, and you don’t need to know HTML. Since it includes plenty of tutorials, anyone can learn how to use this software.
However, maybe you don’t want to create a website using HTML. Maybe you want it in PHP, ASP, or any number of programming languages available. Maybe you want to separate your content from the design so it’s easier to make changes to the design.
That’s where a good content management system comes in handy.
If I were planning to build a website these days using a content management system, I would probably opt for Wordpress. It has lots of plugins so you can make it search engine friendly, these types of sites tend to rank highly, and you don’t even have to use it as a blogging system. You simply create pages instead, and you can pretty much organize those pages any way you want.
Maybe you don’t like Wordpress, or there’s some reason you don’t want to use it. That’s OK. There are a ton of Open Source content management systems available, and you can build just about any kind of site you want.
The first thing you need to do is decide what the purpose of your site is. Will you be writing reviews about products, displaying your own products, offering your services, articles, and any other content you may have?
The purpose of your website, as well as your preferences, and the type of web hosting you use will decide what content management system you use.
The best place to start to find content management systems is Open Source CMS. This site allows you to try out dozens of content management systems that do different things. You can also read about readers’ experiences with each type of content management system.
The beauty of Open Source is that these systems have active communities and you can ask questions, get help, and even maybe find someone to install the scripts for you at a dirt cheap price.
If you don’t find anything there you like, then you can check out script directories. Script directories list thousands of different script with tons of different purposes. This includes content management systems but also scripts that will do other things for you.
My favorite sites to visit to find scripts, and many of them are free, are:
Hot Scripts - This is probably the top script directory on the internet, and it contains thousands of scripts, many of them free. This is where I start to find what I’m looking for.
Scripts - This is similar to Hot Scripts, but you may find some here you didn’t find at Hot Scripts.
Keep in mind that many web hosting solutions offer Fantastico now. Fantastico is a system you can use to install whatever content management system you want to use by just telling the system what directory to put the CMS in. This will make it much easier for you to get up and running.
For the cash crunched who are looking for easy online solutions, here are two that I would recommend:
Google Page Creator - This is a really easy way to build a website because the interface is very similar to Wordpad. If you can use Wordpad, you can create a site. I would recommend a little knowledge of basic HTML so you can code menus and things like that the way you want them and where you want them.
Office Live Small Business - This is MSN’s version of Google Page Creator, but it’s a lot more comprehensive. MSN is committed to helping you build your business online because they want you to buy from them. This site is definitely worth a look because you can build everything online, it’s affordable, and it’s a great place for beginners to get started.
Finally, I want to tell you about some of my favorite programmers on the internet. These guys are the best in the business, and I’ve kept my mouth shut about them because they have helped me so much in building my business. They make the best scripts; search engine friendly, easy to install, and easy to manage and build with.
Patrick Mahoney - Patrick is the one who created the Killer SEO Site Builder, a script that I use for my main website, JingerJarrett.com. This is absolutely one of my favorite scripts because it allows me to integrate RSS feeds for constantly updating content, it allows me to easily customize the look of my site, and I can offer my site visitors an RSS feed. The interface on this software is like working with Wordpad, so it’s easy.
Patrick’s latest project is Super Site Builder Pro. This is not only the least expensive script he’s ever offered, but it’s also his easiest. You don’t need even need a My SQL database to build a site with this script. If you’re using Website.ws, or some other type of web hosting that doesn’t let you create databases, then this is the perfect script, and you can easily build content sites that are search engine friendly.
Kaviraj Kodai - Kavi is the owner of Ultimate Marketing Center, a web hosting service. The scripts he designs are like nothing I have ever seen before. First, there’s the Back Office you get as part of Ultimate Marketing Center. I believe he had several scripts before that would do the same thing, but this is a whole lot better. You’ll find autoresponders, a help desk, ad tracking, affiliate program management, membership management. Basically every tool you need to manage your business online, and it’s so convenient because it’s all in one place.
From time to time he also offers his members custom scripts he’s created. His latest script is Ultimate Website Manager, and you can see it in action on my membership site. This script integrates with the Ebizac back office I just mentioned, making it very easy to automate your membership sites.
Now he’s giving away three of his scripts for free. Clickbank Manager, Membership Manager, and Ad Tracking. These are things that are all integrated into Ebizac now, so I don’t use them. However, if you’re looking for an easy way to run your affiliate program through Clickbank, or create a membership site, these are great scripts.
Get them here: CB Manager Free Scripts.
John Eady - This is one resource I’ve kept secret for a long time because it was just too good to reveal. It would mean giving up a few secrets on how I made money on the internet. However, if you’re looking for scripts that are really easy to install and customize, and especially if you’re an affiliate, this is a must have bookmark.
John writes scripts for everything from Ebay to Overstock. He even offers a script you can use to build an affiliate store from datafeeds, and it’s the best deal on the internet. He uses Smarty for his templates, so they’re very easy to customize, and you can make your site look any way you want it to. Again, many of his scripts don’t require a database, so you can set them up just about anywhere.
You can see one of his scripts in action on my videos sites: Internet Marketing Video. This site actually took me about 15 minutes to set up, and I have a video site for each of my main sites.
You’ll find some great scripts here too you can integrate into your site and use to display RSS so you have constantly updating content.
Scott Trimble - Scott and his buddies are the ones who created Store Stacker. (For those of you who bought this script, make sure you get over to the forum and grab the marketing plan I wrote for this script.)
Scott and Company also write software and scripts that will just flat out make you money. A lot of effort is put into making these scripts automated, which means that once you get your site built, you can turn your attention to things like marketing.
Whether you’re interested in making money from RSS, blogging, or other content, you’ll find a solution here. This isn’t about building junk sites; this is about building websites that make you money.
The only for you to decide now is what kind of website you want to build and get busy. You’ll need a domain, and some hosting, but there are a ton of great deals on the internet. I won’t recommend anything else but Ultimate Marketing Center, which I even use to host my Website.ws site.
Now get busy! Post your comments to this post and let us see those sites!
