I think the biggest mistake people make when building a website, writing articles, or creating any type of promotional materials is that they don’t do good keyword research. They don’t find out what people are really searching for and what words they are using to find what they’re looking for.

There are a lot of ways to do this; how you find the right keywords you use to describe your business is up to you. There are several tools I use, and they’re all pretty easy to use, as well as free.

Web CEO - Web CEO isn’t just a keyword research tool. It’s also a search engine optimization suite. Like a lot of other things I have learned to do in my business, I learned to use this software, as well as optimize my sites for the search engines, by reading the documentation. In fact, this documentation contains plenty of step by step directions for helping you get top rankings in the search engines using white hat search engine optimization techniques.

The strength of the keyword tool in this software is that it tells you how often the word is searched for each day worldwide. It will also give you a ratio so that you know how much competition there is, as well as how good a keyword is for optimizing your site.

Keyword Buzz - Keyword Buzz is just one of many tools from a collection of software created by the guys at IM Buzz Creators. This keyword tool will tell you how often a keyword is searched for each day, as well as tell you how much competition there is in the top three search engines: Yahoo, Google, and MSN. It’s a very simple tool to use, but it’s free, so it’s a great tool for quickly finding keywords.

SEO Book Keyword Tool - This is a free online tool that pulls results from lots of places. It’s a great tool to use if you have a MAC becasue Keyword Buzz won’t work for you. (Web CEO works on both MAc and PC).

I think it’s important to have a wide variety of keyword tools in case one stops working. It’s also good for comparison.
