I read today that about four percent of marketers in internet marketing are making the big bucks, the next six percent are making some money, but not as much as they could, and the other 90 percent aren’t really making anything. It really makes you wonder why.

Duplicate content is an issue that has caused of huge debate online over about the last two to three years. Basically, the whole debate is about whether or not you should use the content of others on your site, content that has been published elsewhere.

Used properly, duplicate content can really help your site because you offer your visitors a wide variety of content, and having a wide variety of content on your site will give it authority.

You may or may not have heard about authority sites and what they are. An authority site is a site on a specific topic that has a lot of content related to the topic. This content comes in a wide variety of forms: articles, ebooks, videos, products like books, or any other content related to the topic. An authority site is meant to be a type of one stop resource on a particular topic.

Because authority sites are so content rich, they tend to rank pretty well in the search engines. Whether you sell affiliate programs or your own products, you want to offer as wide a variety of content as possible on your site and give your visitors as much information as possible to make buying decisions. This can help you more easily make the sale.

With that said, I want to talk about marketing on Facebook. Although some are saying that Facebook is the number one social marketing site on the internet, if you look at the stats on Alexa, it’s actually number two. I believe it’s possible Facebook will eventually overtake MySpace and become the number one site. It’s really irrelavent to you as a marketer though. You should be using both sites to market your business, especially if your primary means of marketing is social marketing.

The other day I was looking for an ebook on marketing on Facebook. I had downloaded an ebook called “Facebook Social Ads” and had decided to read it. Facebook confused me. I wanted to learn how to make it more effective, as well as save time. So I started doing a search on the search engines. The primary one I use is Yahoo, but Yahoo doesn’t always tell me what I want, and so I went to Google. If it’s not on Google, you probably won’t find it.

I did a search for “free facebook ebook” without the quotes. As you know, using quotes around your terms will give you more optimized results. More optimized results means you’re more likely to find what you’re looking for faster. The problem with using quotes is that sometimes it can exclude the very thing you’re looking for.

For those of you who don’t understand, or know what optimized results are, it’s where the web page has been optimized using search engine optimization techniques on the page.

So I did my search on the term above, without the quotes, and surprise, surprise, what has the number one slot?

“Facebook for Pastors”. (This has since changed. This ebook now occupies the #2  and #4 slots I think.)

What the heck? I downloaded it and decided to read it, if, for nothing else, it would be a lesson in niche marketing (Christianity is a niche).

What amazed me is that this pastor really is on the ball. He gets what a lot of people in the church, non profits, and a lot of industries don’t get: whether you think so or not, you’re selling something.

Don’t believe me? Here’s an experiment:

Go read 10 political blogs. Read some liberal ones, some conservative ones, and anything else in between. These bloggers may not be selling you anything directly, but if you know anything about politics, particularly American politics, then you know that the viewpoint, or opinion that has the most who believe it will become the prevailing opinion. This can change everything including elections and who’s in power.

There’s a big debate in the church these days about whether we should dress up or not, use contemporary music or not, and how we should communicate our message to others.

“It’s the method not the message.”

What this means is that you need to update the way you are communicating the message. The message of the church hasn’t changed. The church, like everything else, is ultimately a marketing machine and in order to survive, it must change its methods in order to survive and thrive.

Here’s my point, the bottom line:

If you want to succeed in marketing, you need to look at the message you’re trying to communicate, whether you’re selling affiiate programs, your own products and services, MLM, writing, or anything else. Once you’re clear on what your message is, you really don’t have to go back and revamp your message unless it isn’t working (Some would call this your USP, unique selling proposition).

Next you focus on the method. This is where Facebook and the whole Web 2.0 marketing thing comes in. You need to change the way you market, i.e. update the way you’re marketing in order to stay competitive.

What’s your message? If you don’t have one, you need to create one.

What’s your method? Web 2.0 isn’t going away. You’ll have to embrace it sooner or later or die.

One of the best books I ever read on starting your business was “How to Become a Recognized Authority in 60 Days or Less” by Robert Bly. In this book, Bly shows you how to build a complete product line, as well as establish yourself as an expert so that your customers come to you.

If you take the principles outlined in this book and apply it to the internet, you can pretty much do all of the things talked about in the book from home. What’s even better is that you can even automate a lot of it. Since time is money, it’s a great way to earn an income whether you are working or not.

Bob the Teacher is back now, and he’s giving away a free ebook on teleseminars to show you how to make money from teleseminars. Although you don’t need to buy anything (it’s a front end offer for his Teleseminar Coaching), you do need to sign up. This is a great way to add an additional stream of income to your business, and it’s something you can do in a couple of hours a week for a lot of cash.

For those of you who have read Bob’s Free Ad Report, you know that he makes quality ebooks. Of all of the things I’ve given away in my business, I’ve probably given away more copies of that ebook than anything else. It’s probably the best free ebook on the planet, other than mine, on how to get traffic to your website fast.

Whether you’re looking for a new way to start a business, or you want to expand your current business to help you pull down some cold hard cash, this is a technique I’ll be adding to my business, and you should too.
