Bly didn’t start off as a writer either. His degree is actually in engineering. He started off writing technical manuals related to his area of expertise.
Like just about every book that he writes, this book takes you in depth into the process of how to start a freelance writing business. He covers the process from start to finish: how to start your freelance writing business, finding clients, closing the sale.
There’s also a section on self promotion. This section is an absolute must have for freelance writers because this is where most freelance writers fail: they think being a “great” writer is enough. The truth is that it isn’t the best writers who succeed; it’s the ones who market, get their names out there and aren’t afraid to self promote to build their clientele and make money.
Until I read this book, I really didn’t understand that the reason so many writers fall into the classification of starving is because they don’t market. I’m not sure I understand what makes your writing better than someone else’s especially if you aren’t making any money from it. This book inspired me to really take a look at how I market so that I reach my target market.
(I love to write and would do it for free because I’m so passionate about it. The economic reality though is that just like everyone else, I have to eat, and so I have to get paid for my writing. This book makes it possible for me to make more money from my writing.)
This book is also more than just a book to teach you how to start and market your freelance business. There’s also some pretty good writing tips. You’ll also find information on setting your fees, as well as how to keep your clients happy so they keep coming back.
The book also includes an appendix, which has a lot of really good resources for writers to give you further information. There’s also a list of other books you may read to help you learn more about commercial writing and making money from it. The best part is that he also gives you lots of sample formats for various business documents you need like promotional letters, and these will save you a ton of time.
Like many of Bly’s other books I have read, this book includes everything you need to know on this topic, and it will save you a ton of time in getting started with your writing business.
